My son, Jaren (10), recently started playing tackle
football. He's played flag football since he was 5, and has been asking to play
tackle since. I told him when he was 8 I would let him, then 9, and finally
broke down and signed him up at 10.
I think it's a little more intense then any of us had anticipated. It all
finally came to a head this week. Upset because the coach wouldn't let him go
up against one of the bigger lineman during drills, he asked the next night if
he could. The coach gave him a quizative look, and asked him why? His answer
"because I want to get better." And, in that moment, I couldn't have
been more proud.
He was knocked back several times before finally being able to stand his
ground. And, the student became the teacher. Thank you son for reminding mommy
that sometimes you have to go up against the "big." That you have to
believe in yourself before anyone else will (except mommy she knows you can do
anything you put your mind to). Thank you for not giving up, and thank you for
making me proud. Love you!
Tonight he has his first game, wish him luck!
