Healthy Town: Issue I

I'm beyond excited to bring you the beautiful, giving, loving, and amazing Camilla Mecher for our very first edition of Healthy Town! Camilla studied Moksha Yoga in Brazil and has been teaching Moksha classes in the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Clifton area for the past 2 1/2 years. She loves juicing, listening to Queen City Radio, and hanging out with her friends in the OTR.
"I learn by going where I have to go." - Theodore Roethke

Q: Do you remember having an "aha moment?"

A: I fell hard for hot yoga when I started practicing. While I've been pretty active most of my life, I had never really been passionate about exercise. I was much more motivated by the results of working out rather than the experience itself. I didn't HATE exercise, but when it came down to it, I just didn't want to have to buy bigger pants. When I found yoga though, I started looking forward to the action itself. And I found a mental, even sometimes spiritual, connection to my practice that I had never found while pounding away on a treadmill blasting The Ting Tings on my iPod. So I think that was my "aha moment"...when I realized that there was more to being fit than just fitting into my jeans from college.

Q: What motivates you?

A: The promise of moving more freely, breathing deeper, and growing stronger. The possibility of doing something I couldn't do the last time I tried. The absolute certainty that life will be better if I take better care of myself.
Q: What is your biggest secret when it comes to maintaining an active lifestyle?

A: Well, I actually TEACH hot yoga now, so I don't really have the option of not going to the studio. And even just teaching is a bit of a workout. But, sometimes it's hard to keep up with my own practice when I'm teaching a lot. I love the weeks where I get to practice every day. I love the weeks where I actually use my gym membership. However, I also try not to be too hard on myself if I don't. The amazing thing about movement is that there are endless opportunities for it. So if I'm exhausted, or really strapped for time, or just feeling plain old lazy, I give myself permission to NOT go to yoga class or the gym. I find some other way to keep my body moving, whether it's mowing the lawn, taking a short jog around the neighborhood, or experimenting with some new yoga postures while I watch Netflix. So...short answer: the secret is the desire to never completely break the habit of dynamic physical activity.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to staying active what would it be?

A: Find a physical activity you really love to do, and then it doesn't feel like a workout anymore...it just feels like fun!

Q: What is your favorite go to snack?

A: Gosh, I have so many. Right now for a savory snack I really love ranch Nut Thin crackers topped with organic cucumber slices. (side note: this one was kid approved by the Calhoun boys :)

Because she's nice like that Camilla also should us how to do some juicing! Also, kid approved by my boys!
Ingredients:
6 oranges
2lb bag of carrots (washed & peeled)
pint of strawberries (stem cut off)
2in ginger root peeled

Juiced together in a blender it really ignited our senses. Not only was it pretty, but it smelled divine.

A Big HUGE thank you with lots of squeals and hugs for Camilla! I'm so proud of Healthy Town, what it's become, and what I hope it will be!
