The 4-1-1 Newborn Portraits

Newborn portraits are typically done within the first week of birth. Babies still sleep a lot during this time, and fit nice and easily into the fetal position, making those adorable newborn shots effortless. They really do grow fast, and you'll want to catch this stage before it's gone for good.

With newborn photo shoots, babies rule. They get to eat and sleep as much as they want, and it's the only time in their lives they get away with peeing and pooping on everything and (sometimes) every body. We'll just go with the flow (no pun intended).

I get asked a lot about props, but I honestly think the best props are sentimental. Blankets from grandparents, or outfits worn home from the hospital, make for sweet treasured photographs. Of course, if you have something in mind, we can definitely include it.

As merely a suggestion, I tell the parents to wear solid black shirts and join in the fun. I suggest solid black so busy prints and colors don't take away from the beautiful baby.

3 Tips for Taking Better Pictures of Your Children

The holidays are quickly approaching...so, I thought I'd share 3 simple things you can do to make your holiday photos the best!

  1. Getting down on their level-Yes, take a knee. Sometimes, I'll just sit right on my rear, which isn't good when they run away, (and they almost always do) but getting down on their level is one of the single best things you can do. The proof is in the picture.

  2. Lighting-I recently sat down at a picnic table then checked the position of the sun, then shook my head, giggled, made sure nobody was looking, then tweeted/facebooked about it. As a photographer, I'm constantly aware of the sun, where it is, how it's casting shadows, etc. If you can place your subject in a piece of shade facing the sun, you'll take gorgeous shots every time.

  3. Learn how to control your camera-Why do you think it has all those fancy knobs on it? It's like a house that isn't a home until you've lived in it. Your camera really hasn't taken pictures until you've learned how to use it. So, break out your manual, learn what those controls do, and if I'm being quite honest here, there's no better way to learn then by just doing. Go on now, get!

Good luck, and have fun!

Making the Best of Your Shoot

I came across a great quote the other day and I thought it was very fitting for today's post.

"Remember, beautiful and memorable portraits do not just happen, they are carefully planned."

So perfect. So true.

If were being completely honest here, no one can make your shoot more enjoyable and memorable than you. That's not to say I don't play a very important role, nonetheless, the circumstances leading up to, and during your shoot, will make or break it. So I've tried to come up with a little helpful list.

1. Plan Ahead- It's a good idea to plan for your photo shoot from the very beginning.
  • The web is a great place to go for inspiration. Take a look around at outfit coordination, locations, props, etc. (Themed shoots are really popular right now, and I totally love them!)
  • Waiting around until the last minute can cause unneeded stress.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for ideas or help. I love the creative process of my job and I might a have about a million ideas swirling around in the back of my head...
2. Hair & Makeup- I think having your hair styled and makeup done by a professional is the single best thing you can do for your photo shoot.
  • This freaks a lot of people out, but I promise, I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't see the added value. We all feel pretty when we've just stepped out of the salon and people who feel pretty, look pretty.
  • If you plan ahead, there's no reason why you couldn't coordinate your regularly scheduled maintenance (cut, color, eyebrow wax) for the same day as your photo shoot.
  • I'm also a big advocate of practice what you preach. There is no way I would suggest this, if I wouldn't do it myself. In fact, the last time we did pictures, I had scheduled my hair appt. for the same day. To date, my favorite pictures of me, EVER! I don't think I'll ever have pictures done again with out having my hair done first! Of course, make sure it's someone you trust and you have a clear picture of what you want. Nobody wants to walk out of a salon crying, especially if they're going to have their picture taken.
3.Make it a family affair- Alright, I could possibly dedicate a full post to how to get your kids and husband to cooperate (let's face it, sometimes the husband is just as bad, if not worse than the kids) but I'll try to keep it as simple as possible.
  • Number 1&2 are a great start, cause let's face it..."If Mamma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."
  • Have it become a family tradition. I recommend once a year when the kids are past the age of two (this way nobody gets burnt out).
  • I also recommend positive reinforcements (often referred to as bribes). This can simply be doing something fun together afterwards, like going to the park or dinner. You'll know what will work for your family.
  • {{{Shhhh}}}...Ladies, come in real close for this next one..."positive reinforcements" just might work for your hubbie's too. I'm just sayin'.

4. Stay cool- Because meltdowns are pretty much inevitable.
  • The best way to recover is by staying calm.
  • Don't set yourself up for failure. Make sure everyone is fed, bathed, and napped beforehand (probably the three key things when where dealing with the little ones).

Alright, did I cover it all? Probably not, so feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you might have.

The 4-1-1 Senior Portraits

Is it that time all ready? It's getting close... So, all the senior portrait goodness, is right here, right now.
Photobucket

What to wear? You'll want to have 2-3 outfit changes, preferably something casual, and something a bit more dressy. You can also include school uniforms (band, cheer, etc). Don't be afraid to show your style, but be cautious of prints that are too busy. They can take away from what's most important, you! If you're undecided, bring a few things to choose from, and we can help. Of course, don't forget to accessorize!
Photobucket

Hair & Makeup? I recommend to have your hair and makeup done by a professional. I started doing this once I saw the great results that come from it. I'm more than happy to give recommendations if you need one.
Photobucket

Props? You are welcome to bring along props, particularly things of interest (a musical instrument, sporting equipment, or anything hobby related).
Photobucket

Where? The location is completely up to you! Calhoun ink has a wide variety of locations to choose from, and we're always up for new locations too.

I hope these pointers help as you get ready to embark on one of the best years of your life. Don't forget to check out the Senior Portrait Package here.

The 4-1-1, Maternity

Maternity shoots are designed to capture the memory of your pregnancy. Believe you me, it goes by quick, and you never know when it might be your last. Unless you know, in which case...you will definitely want pictures.

Q. When is a good time to do maternity pictures?

A. I suggest around 30 weeks of pregnancy. This allows you a good baby bump without being to big, and uncomfortable. By this time you should be past any morning sickness, and getting excited about preparing for the baby's arrival. The excitement is present, and so is the "glow".

Photobucket

Q. Where?

A. I suggest (but merely suggest) locations where mood can be felt. Some where quite, soft, and relaxing. Your home, a quiet meadow, or a dessert landscape would all be good choices.

Photobucket

Q. Should I bring him along?

A. Of course! He is a big part of the experience, and we can capture the love that your baby already feels.

Q. What should I wear?

A. Now this can very. But I suggest something that will accentuate your belly. This can be done typically with a tighter fit. Preferably a dark and/or solid color. You can always bring a few choices, and outfit changes are always encouraged.

Photobucket

Q. How long will my shoot last?

A. Maternity shoots can last 1-2 hours. It will really depend on you.

I hope that answers any questions you may have about a maternity shoot. If you have any more, or anything to add. I would love for you to do so in the comments. Or by emailing lori@calhounink.com. Maternity shoots are such a fun, and special occasion. Your only regret will be that you didn't do one.

Also, with the purchase of a maternity shoot you will receive 50% off your newborn shoot!

My Session Tips!

I have been asked a lot about what I think does and doesn't work on photo-shoots. I thought about it and compiled my own helpful Q & A. I hope you find this useful as you prepare for your photo session!

*Please note that this is my personal opinion and is in no way intended to offend or put anyone off. Also, if you have attempted one of the faux pas in the past, please know you are in good company.

Q. What should I/we wear? This is the number one question I receive regardless of whether I'm the one doing the shoot (which, by the way, is still totally cool by me)!

A. Wear fun and vibrant colors (those that look best on you). As a general rule of thumb I don't recommend wearing white.

Q. But I really want us all to match? Okay, that's not really a question, but I get it a lot.

A. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT all wear the same color. Instead, color coordinate. For instance, in our family photos this spring, I picked out different but coordinating shirts for my boys. They wore brown with hints of blue and orange. Richard wore blue and I wore orange. These were, without question, my favorite family photos we've ever done. Feel free to look around and come with ideas from the internet or your friends' blogs :).

Q.Can we schedule my appointment for after I get my hair done?

A. Yes!!! Try to coordinate your photo session with your hair appointment. Shoot for the same day if at all possible. Everyone feels pretty after they've just had their hair done. Pictures turn out best when you feel good about yourself. Make sure your children feel handsome/pretty as well.

Q. What kind of props should we bring/use?

A. My very favorite props are those you wear. Wear your cutest blinged out jewelry! Rings, earrings, necklaces, etc!!! If you have something that is extra special, an heirloom perhaps, what better time to wear it? Hats, scarves, and shoes are a simple way to spice up your pictures! The funkier, the better I say! If you have a special interest or hobby, for example, you play guitar or ride Harleys, bring 'em!

Q.Where should we shoot?

A. I think places that hold a special meaning to you are the best (your home, where you first met, etc.)! Places that are unique, or have great architecture, are also great. Hip and funky pictures are really in right now as well. Urban or junk yard photo shoot, anyone? Remember, shade is a requirement. If it's a public place, you're not likely to get kicked out, but private property is a big no-no, unless you get permission.

Q. Any other special advice you can give me?

A. I think I covered most everything. But, if you have anything you'd like to add, please feel free to do so in the comments!
